Sam's parents enjoyed watching cross-country skiing and biathlon, and so took the family to Le Grand Bornand when Sam was 12 to go nordic skiing. The family enjoyed it so much that they have been away at least once a year ever since. Sam got into competitive skiing through his Dad dragging him into rollerskiing at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit with the LRNSC, from where he was invited to join the British Nordic Development Squad. After overcoming a little wobble in confidence to start with, he was hooked, and Sam never forgets how lucky he is to be able to be part of the sport. Sam's second favourite thing about going away on training camps (after the skiing) is being able to eat as much as he wants. He didn't really have a single great idol growing up, but he was somewhat in awe of biathlete Martin Fourcade as an athlete of unbelievable consistency!
