James was born and raised in the mountains around Grenoble (France), by a French ski lover and an English mother. As soon as he was old enough to stand, he was old enough to ski! While his older brothers preferred snowboarding, he chose Cross Country Skiing. By the age of 9, he was already doing his first races and has never managed to stop since.

James joined the British Team at the age of 16. He has represented Great Britain in the European Youth Olympics in 2013, and in the World Junior Championships in 2014,  2015 and 2018.

Clugnet made his World Cup debut at Ruka in November 2017 and at the following event in Dresden he earned his first career top 10 alongside Andrew Young in the team sprint (9th).

He was elevated to the Elite Squad for 2018/19 and at his second World Cup of the season qualified into the top 30 in a sprint event for the first time. He then went on to achieve that feat again in the opening stage of the Tour de Ski, ultimately finishing with a career-high 17th.
