World Champs update: Bankes' strong start

World number four Charlotte Bankes has won safely through to tonight's quarter-finals of the snowboard cross World Championships after comfortably qualifying through last night.

With the top eight progressing directly to the final from the first qualifying run, Bankes clocked the third fastest time and was able to bypass the second qualifying run.

Sixteen athletes will line up in tonight's knockout rounds where the top two finishers will proceed through from the quarter-finals to the semis and ultimately the final. Bankes will line up in the third quarter-final against French two-time World Cup winner Chloe Trespeuch, Switzerland's 2016 Junior World Championship silver medallist Lara Casanova and Italy's two-time national champion Sofia Belingheri.

Snowboard Cross finals can be viewed on the BBC Red Button from 5:50pm GMT tonight.

Ski Cross qualifying takes place tonight, with a shortened field of entrants meaning Emily Sarsfield and Emma Peters will qualify for the round of 32, however their seeding in the knockout rounds will be determined by their times.

Junior World Champion Ollie Davies (pictured) will need to qualify inside the top 32 if he is to move through to Saturday's knockout rounds.
