Olivia Howeson - 2019 U14 Slalom Champion (racer-ready.co.uk)

After a busy opening day of the GB Alpine Children’s Championships in Tignes, today’s competition focused solely on the U16 slalom.

Having come through yesterday’s super G with the gold medal, Kandahar’s Adam Radwan was keen to back it up again today and did just that, storming home to claim the Pindisport Cup.

Fraser Baggaley (Alpine Training Centre) led by 0.12sec after the first run, however Radwan (1:39.83) stormed home with a second run almost four-tenths quicker to earn his second win in as many days.

Baggaley (1:40.08) held onto the silver medal position, while Evolution’s Kieran Woolley (1:41.71) took advantage of a DNF to BSA’s Luca Carrick-Smith to claim the final place on the podium.

“It’s really cool to be competing out here in Europe against some of the best British skiers,” said Radwan. “The conditions are a bit different to what I’m used to in the United States where it’s a bit icy. Racing here is really cool.”

After the first run of the girls’ under 14 slalom, the podium was shaping up to look similar to that of the super G. Yesterday’s winner Honor Bartlett was more than two seconds clear after the first run with super G silver medallist Sophie Stocker also in a podium please.

However a DNF from Bartlett and a DQ for Stocker three gates from home threw the competition wide open with Olivia Howeson capitalising to claim the Midland Ski Cup.

Sending down the fastest second run of the field, Howeson (1:40.31) led a Team Evolution one-two with Charlotte Holmes (1:40.69) claiming silver while Mathilde Phillips picked up the bronze.

“I was fairly happy with both of the runs I put together for the slalom,” said Howeson. “It felt good on the way down but I could have been less skiddy to go even faster.

“I’m very proud with being the British champion. Slalom is my best discipline because I work the most at it as I find it the most enjoyable.

It’s quite nerve-wracking coming to the British championships but I put it out of my mind and just concentrate on racing as best I can. The competition helps me to know where I am in terms of the other racers who are my age.”

The Under 16s are back in action tomorrow in slalom while the U10s and U12s will compete in the Kombi races on the ski cross course.
