Delancey's Ones to Watch: Mia Brookes - Blog #3

Eleven-year-old snowboarding ace Mia Brookes had a fantastic time at The BRITS last week, winning the senior Big Air title, finishing third in the halfpipe and also placing second in the Ritblat Endeavour Awards. We caught up with her prior to the event to check in on what she's been up to for the past couple of months.

What have you been up to since we last caught up?

I have just arrived back in Laax for the pre-BRITS training week but other than that I've mainly been back at school.

In February half-term I went back out to Laax with my mum to ride with my coach Ben Kinnear and the rest of the GB Park & Pipe team. It was a really snowy week so we spent lots of time with Ross Hill, the GB Park & Pipe acrobatic and athletic coach in the freestyle academy, learning about stretching after snowboarding and worked on tricks on the trampolines, which was brilliant fun!

In March my dad took me back out for three days so that I could compete in the Laax Kids Open.

While I've been back at school I 've been preparing for my Year 6 SATS but also I've been loving cross-country running. I was selected for the school team and so far I have done all three local town schools races. I'm so happy as I came first in every race and this is also helping me to keep fit while I'm back home.

In my spare time at the weekends I go to Ramp 1 to skate and I'm practising lots towards my next electric guitar exam.

Did you get a chance to watch much of the Olympics last month?

We were in Laax for half-term while the Olympics were on but we don't have a TV in the motorhome so I couldn't watch it!  Also the comps were on in the middle of the night but every morning we checked on Facebook and Instagram to see how everyone was doing. I was so happy when Billy won a medal but also sad for Katie - I think she could have definitely got on the podium too. I hope she's back riding soon.

Everyone did amazing!!!

Have you entered any comps and had any good results since we last spoke?

While I was out in February there was a big air competition in Davos. The lads were all going there to compete and we found out that they were also doing a Junior comp so we went along too. I'd never been to this park before so didn't know what to expect - I did my best and I was so happy to come first in overall catergory! Then in the evening we watched the lads doing the big air finals - it was flood-lit and really fun to watch.

In March, my dad took me out for a long weekend to compete in the Laax Kids Open - there were so many kids there amd I was the only British girl competing and I did really well and I came first.

I love competitions and when I do well and podium it is an amazing feeling!  As long as I can land my runs clean with the tricks I wanted to do then I'm happy! Whatever happens my dad always says to me "if your grinning your winning!!" :)))

Next time we catch up with you will be after The BRITS...

The BRITS is really good fun, I get to see and go riding with all my friends, oh.... we all get to see Colin and his Clipboard of Power again!!!!!
