British Nordic Squads announced for 2017/18 season

British Ski and Snowboard are delighted to announce the British Nordic Squads for the 2017/18 season. With PyeongChang Winter Olympics just over eight months away and the Cross Country World Cup schedule now set, the Elite Squad is already in full preparation mode for the season, training hard both in the UK and overseas.

The British Nordic Elite Squad for the 2017/18 season will be Andrew Musgrave (27, Huntly), Andrew Young (25, Huntly), Callum Smith (24, Inverurie) and Annika Taylor (23, Truckee, USA), all who have met the qualification criteria for PyeongChang 2018. Last season saw some impressive performances from Musgrave, who finished 4th place in the 50km Freestyle race at the World Championships in Lahti. Andrew Young clocked the best result of his career in the 2015/16 season, taking third place at the Toblach World Cup in the Sprint Freestyle final. The team have also recently received a huge boost with the appointment of two new full time coaches in the form of Elite Sprint Coach Jostein Vinjerui and Elite Endurance Coach Hans Kristian Stadheim.

The British Nordic Performance Squad will consist of James Clugnet (20, Grenoble), who still has a chance to meet the Olympic Qualifying criteria, with Sam Cairns (21, Aviemore) and Jack Nicholls (17, Huntly) making up the Senior Squad. Three athletes feature in the Junior Squad for the 2017/18 season, Brodie Murray (17, Huntly), Oliver Newman (18, Huntly) and twin brother Fergus Newman (18, Huntly).

British Nordic Head Coach Roy Young said following the announcement: “We are coming into a very exciting time for British Nordic. We have athletes who are capable of podium finishes at world class level, and it is looking like we will take at least four athletes to PyeongChang 2018 to represent Team GB. Our two new world-class coaches are already making a huge impact on all our athletes, and the spirit within the team is on a real high. We can’t wait to get started.”
