Laurie started skiing when he was 6 years old on a family holiday. From this moment he loved skiing and this led him to start racing on dry slopes and join the Aldershot ski race team when he was 9. Laurie was very keen and wanted to get as many runs as possible on the training courses. It wasn’t long before he started joining in with other clubs (Bromley and Southampton) for more training. When Laurie was 10, after a dry slope camp, he was invited to train at the British Ski Academy (BSA) by Malcolm Erskine. He skied with BSA for 10 years based in Les Houches, France and it was a home away from home where he also worked in the kitchen to help fund the training. During this time (between 12 and 16) Laurie's family moved to New Zealand and he then trained with the Queenstown Alpine ski team during the Southern Hemisphere winters and continued training there after moving back to England.
