When Dave was six years-old, his father Carl, a ski-mad lifelong enthusiast, encouraged him to take lessons at the local dry ski slopes near their home – so he joined Pendle Ski Club. In fact, his father gave his sister and him a really good incentive to get involved - if they achieved a good basic level, him and his wife Shirley would take Dave and his sister skiing on real snow!

Dave specializes in the discipline of Slalom and has achieved 7 British Slalom Titles, competed at 2 Winter Olympic Games, placing 17th in the Slalom at Sochi in 2014.

In 2013 he was the first Brit to win an Overall Europa Cup title. In the 2015 season he made a big step and finished in the top 30 in World Cup races 5 times, with his best result 16th in Madonna di Campiglio. He finished the season 30th in the World Cup standings.

Dave managed to move things up another level in the 2016 season... he kicked off the season with a career best 12th place in the Val d'isere World Cup, and backed this up throughout the World Cup season with 13th in Santa Caterina, 16th in Schladming and Wengen and 4 further top 30 World Cup Placings. The reward for Dave was becoming the 4th Brit EVER to make it to the World Cup finals (top 25 in the world Cup standings), where he placed a great 15th! Dave finished the World Cup season standings in 22nd position scoring 115 World Cup points. The 2nd most by a British skier in a single discipline. As ever, Dave always relishes the challenge of racing his fellow British racers at the Delancey British Alpine Champions in Tignes, France: winning the title in 2016, Dave equalled Alain Baxter's record of winning 7 British National Slalom Titles.

Dave had a brilliant start to the 2016/2017 season by finishing 6th in the World Cup Slalom Opener in Levi, Finland - this was his first top 10 finish at a World Cup. He then finished a fantastic 2nd in the World Cup Slalom in Kitzbühel, Austria which was the best British Alpine result for 35 years, and the first World Cup podium of his career.

At the end of the 2016/17 season, Dave ranked 8th in the Slalom FIS World Cup standings, and ranked 9th in the world for slalom.
